Tips: Car Rentals: Drive Smarter, Save More!

Traveling with kids is all about creating memories, and getting around your destination shouldn't be a stressor. Here are some tips to help you navigate car rentals and public transportation with ease:

Car Rentals:

  • Memberships to the rescue: You could make the most of your current memberships Costco, AAA, Amazon Prime, or AARP. That’s right, many of your current memberships with these providers and many more may have exclusive car rental discounts and perks. Check your respective membership details to see if you may qualify for discounts— who knew Amazon Prime had a car rental discount too 🤩 ?!

  • Book in advance, especially during peak seasons. This ensures you get the car you need and avoids airport rental queues.

  • Off-Airport Locations: Renting from an off-airport location can often be cheaper. Consider taking public transportation or a rideshare to save on rental fees.

  • Weekday Rentals: Renting a car on weekdays tends to be less expensive than on weekends. If your schedule allows, consider adjusting your travel dates for potential savings.

  • Early Bird or Late Return: Some rental companies offer discounts for early morning or late evening rentals. Check for these options when booking.

  • Pre-Pay or Book in Advance: Often, prepaying for your rental or booking well in advance can secure lower rates.

Maximize Your Credit Card Benefits:

  • Insurance Coverage: Many premium credit cards offer primary rental car insurance, potentially saving you money on additional coverage offered by rental companies.

  • Rental Car Discounts: Check if your credit card offers discounts with specific rental car companies. Some cards even provide elite status, granting you perks like free upgrades or priority service.

  • Reward Points: Use your credit card to earn points or miles on your rental, which can be redeemed for future travel or merchandise— learn more here.

Public Transportation:

  • Research public transit options before you go. Download apps like Citymapper or Google Maps to navigate unfamiliar routes.

  • Invest in a stroller organizer. Keep essentials like snacks, wipes, and water bottles at hand for easy access. For us, the Doona car seat/stroller combo was a game-changer. It's perfect for travel and everyday use. It’s on the pricier side, so we do recommend getting it secondhand to save money. Check out Goodbuygear.com for gently-used baby products at discounted prices. You can find strollers, car seats, carriers, and more!

  • Consider purchasing a travel pass. Many cities offer multi-day passes that can save you money and make getting around more convenient. Consider purchasing a CityPASS for popular tourist destinations. CityPASS offers bundled admission to top attractions at a discounted rate, saving you money and planning time. This allows you to explore iconic landmarks without breaking the bank.

Bonus Tip: For frequent travelers, consider enrolling in programs like TSA PreCheck or Global Entry to expedite airport security lines. This can save precious time and make the travel experience smoother for the whole family. Learn more about these two programs HERE.
