Tips: The Ultimate Road Trip Checklist

Nobody enjoys a roadside breakdown, especially when kids are cooped up in the back seat. A little pre-trip planning can go a long way in ensuring a stress-free and safe adventure for everyone.

Here's what you need to consider:

  • Vehicle Checkup: Schedule a routine maintenance appointment to address any potential issues. This includes checking fluids, tires, brakes, and filters. We suggest using the free CARFAX Car Care app. It provides service reminders based on your specific car model and will quickly alert you to any safety recalls.

  • Pack Smart: Pack a small emergency kit with essentials like jumper cables, a flashlight, first-aid supplies, and non-perishable snacks and water. Check out the best first-aid kit we suggest on this list. If you are a DIYer, don’t forget to pick up a tire plug kit and consider a portable tire inflator.

  • Safety First: Ensure all passengers are buckled up with age-appropriate car seats or booster seats. Refresh your family on road trip safety rules.

  • Plan your Route: Map out your journey with rest stops and kid-friendly attractions in mind. Consider apps like Roadtrippers or AAA TripTik that help plan scenic routes and find unique pit stops along the way.

  • Prepare for Entertainment: Pack a variety of activities to keep young minds occupied. Board games, travel journals, coloring books, and scavenger hunt printables are all great options. Classic car games like "I Spy" or "Would You Rather?" are always fun too! Download movies and shows on tablets beforehand with apps like Netflix or Disney+.

  • Peace of Mind on the Road: Consider investing in a roadside assistance plan from a reputable company like AAA or CAA. These services can be lifesavers in case of a flat tire, dead battery, or even a minor breakdown, getting you back on the road quickly and minimizing disruptions to your trip.

  • Embrace the Adventure: Remember, the journey is part of the adventure! Let the kids help plan playlists, choose snacks, and even navigate using a map (bonus points if it's an old-fashioned paper one!). Embrace the unexpected detours and sing along to silly songs.

By following these tips, you can transform a potentially stressful peak season trip into a well-organized and enriching family adventure. Remember, planning and flexibility are key!
