Meet Jenn and Phil, the parents behind travel_familystyle, a family of four who are passionate about traveling. They are in a unique stage of parenting as their kids are in their tweens and teens, making their adventures even more exciting. Despite the busy nature of their lives, Jenn and Phil both work full-time, and their kids are homeschooled. Phil frequently travels for work, covering multiple states in the US as part of his sales territory. Jenn has been a teacher for 21 years and is grateful to be now able to work remotely.

Here's why they think family travel is important:

"There’s nothing like seeing the world through your child’s eyes. We started out with small local trips when our kids were babies, but now we’re flying across the world on 13 hour flights. Spending time together is our number one priority. Family travel has been an incredible way to make memories and see the world together. Time is fleeting, so we are soaking up every second."

Every family has different challenges when it comes to family travel— for these parents, it’s finding affordable yet fun places for their family:

"The most challenging part of traveling with kids is finding places to go that are affordable, yet fun for everyone. Our biggest challenge is finding places to go that are affordable, yet fun for everyone. There are lots of destinations on our bucket list, but if they don’t fall within our budget, we have to keep looking. Once in a while, depending on the destination, we’ll splurge a little, which certainly doesn’t help the budget. However, we end up with the most incredible memories and walk away with no regrets!"

Their #1 advice for new traveling parents is:

"The best advice I can offer new families who are interested in travel is to just get out there and do it. It doesn’t have to be fancy and it doesn’t have to be far. Start small with local outings, and as your kids become accustomed to a travel lifestyle, it will all fall into place. Everybody starts somewhere so try not to compare your adventures to someone else’s."

Last but not least, their favorite travel momento to collect on their travels are Christmas ornaments:

Every year our Christmas tree is filled with a memory from all the places we’ve been. Whether it’s a short trip or somewhere far away, we have a nostalgic ornament to remember our adventure.

And let's not forget about the food!

This family loves trying new and delicious local cuisines. Here are a few of their favorite restaurants thus far:

  • Bluewater Seafood (on India Street) in San Diego, CA: This seafood restaurant has been a family favorite for years. We recommend trying the seafood paella and the grilled octopus.

  • Irmita’s in St. George, UT: If you're looking for the best Mexican food, look no further than Irmita's.

  • Kroll’s in Green Bay, WI: This family loves their fried cheese curds & butter burgers.
